Teibele and Her Demon

Isaac Bashevis Singer

Isaac Bashevis Singer was a Polish-born Jewish-American novelist, He wrote exclusively in his mother tongue, Yiddish about his fellow Jews with whom he lived in Poland, and then about Jewish migrants in America. This was originally short story which was later adapted for theater by the author.

The main character Alhonon, a learned man and “Kabbalist”, after studying in Lublin comes back to his small village where he continues to live and teach in Yeshiva. Intoxicated by the mysticism of his spirit and his surroundings, he plunges into a passionate love affair with Taibele. The drama is on the edge of fantasy, Alhonon presents himself to his beloved as the demon Hurmiza. Taibele falls in love to her Demon, and nothing can dissuade her of his existence, even when trickery is exposed. All the anger of the rabbi, the condemnation of the village, the explanations given to her by Alhonon himself, now her husband, cannot kill in her the passion and faith in the existence of her beloved Demon…
